You’re entering bear country! Kings Canyon is home to the majestic black bear. Although called “black,” their fur can be black, brown, or even cinnamon-colored. Black bears are curious but shy—if you’re lucky, you might spot one foraging for berries or climbing trees. Remember, always observe wildlife from a safe distance!
Hunting for lunch, the Sharp-shinned Hawk zooms through the landscape. It hunts by using it’s agility and surprise, it navigates through dense underbrush in order to nab the prey right out of the air. Often feeding on smaller birds, the hawk will perch on a fence post and pick the feathers of it’s prey.
Tiny speedster of the pines! Lodgepole chipmunks stash seeds and nuts in cheek pouches and help the forest by spreading them. Watch for quick zips across logs and rocks.
Named for their big “mule-like” ears, mule deer browse shrubs and grasses at dawn and dusk. If you see a white tail with a black tip bouncing away, that’s them “stotting.”
